Nobody's perfect:
May 16, 2001: Magura recalls 2001 Gustav M disk brakes

Some early 2001 Gustav M disk brake levers needed to be recalled. The levers on a small number of brakes need to be exchanged. See your local Magura dealer for a free inspection and replacement (if needed). You can download the inspection manual here (or here if you prefer a German version).

Also, I have often lauded Magura for their excellent manuals, and I will continue to do so. The manual for the 2001 Gustav M contains one mistake, though. Magura's Martin Schäfer just emailed me the corrected instructions:

When changing pads, the tubing, or bleeding the brake the manual asks that the pads/slave cylinders be pushed completely back with a pair of pliers. THIS IS INCORRECT! Instead, put the black plastic spacer (used when transporting the bike without the wheels) between the pads and apply pressure to the lever until the spacer is held firmly between the pads. Release the lever and continue as described in the manual.

Again note that this only applies to the 2001 model year (left picture below)! Older Gustavs (right picture) should be bled as described in the manual.

The brakes on my new full-suspension tandem were affected by the recall. I exchanged the levers myself and performed the check described in the new manual, and now I have the best tandem brake available!
