My
track bike:
"Track racing must be boring. All you do is just ride around in circles." I thought when I first heard that my high school-friend Matt drove to the local bike track, the Alkek Velodrome in Houston, every Friday night. Little did I know! I got hooked immediately when I Matt finally managed to talk me into coming along to watch, and when Kathy Volski, the Velodrome manager, was able to come up with funding for rental bikes, I was among the first to race on the new bikes. Romic is a Houston-based frame builder. The original owner, Ray Gasiorowski, passed away Nov. 16th, 1996, though AFAIK the company still builds frames. Judginmg from the bikes I have seen and ridden, they build great steel road and track frames. The rental bikes at the Alkek Velodrome sport beautiful Mavic cranks and hubs. The bikes are still in use today. I used one of their rental bike both during my year in Kingwood in 1988/89 (racing for the Woodlands Cycling Club) and at UT 1996/97 (racing for the UT Cycling Team and Team Bank United / Loco Velo). Romic can be contacted at:
Discussion on the tandem-related email list [Tandem @Hobbes] has convinced me to finally give fixed-gear cycling on the road a try. See here for a desciption of my new fixed-gear road bike. |
